The Wait is Over!

2 weeks ago, I was offered a position at Trimark Strategic! I started yesterday with my official tile being in Reinvestment Development. Basically, I design layouts and floor plans for existing Chick-fil-a's that need an update in the back of the house. I use Auto-CAD and Revit, which was exactly what I was looking for in a career, to draft the construction documents.

I can't express into words how happy I am. I love my job! I swear it's my dream job; I work for a christian company with nice people, I use drafting software all day, I have a massive cubicle, and I can make my own hours (I think I'm liking 7-3). I am so excited!

At the moment, I am waiting for my work computer to get to the office so that I can get my username and work stuff all set up: email, payroll, time card, etc. Since it is a new office building in Atlanta, I'm coming in with nothing in the office but the cubicles and a desk phone LOL. My cubicle is in desperate need of personalization...

A New Year

2014 starts today. Another year older, perhaps another year wiser, but still no progress in the design field. I am not having much luck with job searching, mainly because of my lack of experience. I want so badly to be an interior designer for a commercial company, but every job I apply for and every interview I go on, it's the same results. No job. No experience. No further opportunities. Some have been helpful with passing my name along and saying they will call me if a position is available, but I am rapidly losing hope. I love interior design and I will not stop applying for positions, but it is starting to slip away from me.

It has been a year since I graduated, and I am worried that the longer I don't have a job in the design field, the less likely I am to get one. I could always look into getting certifications like LEED and NCIDQ, but those are expensive. I still want both of those certifications, but I was hoping to have a job that would reimburse/pay for it for me.

Now that I am working in a daycare as an Early Education Teacher, I have discovered that I thoroughly enjoy teaching. I am looking into perhaps getting a Masters in Elementary Education. Maybe I should switch careers before I even get started. Maybe become a teacher, and eventually save up money to start my own design business later.

A New Year. New possibilities. Perhaps, a new career.

BS in Interior Design

So, it's been a while since I've been on my blog. Obviously, the 365 day challenge didn't work out, but I am going to start using this blog again for design.

For starters, I am an official graduate of Georgia Southern University with a BS in Interior Design! That's exciting! I am continuing my education because I want a masters degree, so I was pursuing Mechanical Engineering. Unfortunately  I found it just as boring this time as I did 4 years ago when I first went to college. So, I am now working towards a PhD. in Psychology (I'll get my masters along the way).

I am very interested in cognitive behavior and mental trauma  I am just fascinated by the ways the mind protects itself from traumatic events like multiple personality disorder, and I want to study why people do the things they do - mainly pertaining to criminal behavior. I also thoroughly enjoy my Child Psychology class I am taking at the moment, and I believe if I pursued this path, I could apply it to my Interior Design degree and perhaps work on children-focused buildings - hospitals, day care centers, entertainment, etc.

I'm excited to have my degree, but now, I'm ready to start life and a career.

365 Day Challenge

So, as I expected, I have already missed quite a few days in my challenge. I guess it will end up being more like a 52 week challenge

loft

I love this loft. The photograph is nice and balanced and works well with the design. I like the unique features like th eceiling fan and the fireplace. I love wood, and the wood here goes well with the white shag rug that repeated in the white HVAC. It's akso always nice to see greenery in the house. Maybe some bohemian blinds or roman shades would be nice in this room or some added color in the shag rug.

365 Day Challenge

Day 1:

I want to post a new picture about design everyday (or every week probably when I get back to being busy with school). Here's the first one:

living wall, living room

Likes: the simplicity, the originality of the stairs, the repetition of the stairs with the shelves, the earth tone color palette, the asymmetrical balance, the color of the wood stain in the whole room

Dislikes: It reminds me of Eva from Wall-E. Seriously. It's innovative, but TOO clean. I would be afraid to let even a speck of dirt to fall in this room or accidentally smudge a plant leaf into the white shag area rug.

College Career

I have one more class to take this fall (History of Interiors II), and I will have a B.S. in Interior Design from Georgia Southern Univeristy (GSU).

I have been so happy with the program here. The teachers are all experienced and knowledgeable in their fields, and I feel like I learned LOTS. Even when I went to product expos and designer conferences, I would talk to students in interior design programs as SCAD, UGA, etc. and felt like I knew tons more then them ( and they were almost done with their program at the time). I would recommend anybody wanting to be a professional interior designer to take the program at Georgia Southern University. It's a HARD program and you have to really want it, but when you finish and realize how much you've learned, it's very rewarding.

I'm glad I came here to GSU, and I will send everyone wanting to do interior design (INDS) here. Also, when I have my own business, I will personally ask for graduate students from GSU because I know that they were taught well, and I have high expectations for them.

I'll miss my fellow studio ladies, and I wish them well in their design fields. I have another two years left because I am also working towards my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, but I will join them eventually.

My dream job is to one day open my own Wedding Planning/ Interior Design business with one of my best friends and fellow Interior Design graduates, Cory Morgan. We both love the organized chaos that both fields will bring, and we have so much to offer as well. By doing both, we hope to always have some business and to combine our knowledge and personal experiences together to make a solid, long-lasting business.
